A South African court has sentenced Mahatma Gandhi’s granddaughter to life in prison.
Mahatma Gandhi’s great-granddaughter Ashish Lata Ramgobin has been sentenced to life in prison in South Africa. She has been jailed for embezzling about Rs 3.22 crore.

A Durban court has sentenced him to seven years in prison following her conviction in a fraud case. Ashish Lata is said to have spoken to Maharaj, an entrepreneur, to get the import and customs duty clearance work for goods to come from India.

It is also said to have promised to divide the profits equally. In this case, she was convicted and sentenced to life in prison by the Durban Special Commercial Criminal Court.
Ashish Lata Ramkobin is 56. She was born to social activist Ila Gandhi and the late Mewa Ramkopin. The court not only sentenced Ashish Lata to life imprisonment but also denied her permission to appeal.
